Art Panel Workshops

Over 140 rolled up their sleeves and used their creative skills to paint 6 stained glass window panels, each measuring 794mm by 2000mm.  Each class worked on their individual panel, with Artist Jonathan Boast who had carefully considered important aspects of Darwin’s life in his initial design.  The designs on the panels were painted in different colours according to each of the school’s colours.

As the pupils painted the canvases they questioned the artist about the elements included in the design and in taking ownership of their education began to understand and contemplate the life of Charles Darwin. Each class took a day to complete their artwork with the artist mentoring them in professional materials, methods and processes. Elements of each of the six completed windows will come together as a final Window image to form part of the Charles Darwin: A Genius in the Heart of London display.

The windows will be judged by a panel from the projects steering committee, and the winning window will form part of the Charles Darwin: A Genius in the Heart of London display, which begins its tour at Westminster Abbey from the 16 – 27 November, 2009.  The schools that took part in the project were Soho Parish Primary School, St Barnabas CE Primary School, St Vincent de Paul RC Primary School, St Matthews CE Primary School and Burdett Coutts Primary School. Each school will keep their individual window, which they can have on display in memory of Charles Darwin; a genius in the heart of London
